Install Tintstep on Chrome.
Tintstep runs on Chrome 116 or newer, on a desktop computer. It uses the side panel, which Chrome added for extensions in that version.
- Open the Chrome Web Store listing.
- Choose Add to Chrome.
- Confirm the permissions.
- Click the puzzle piece if you want the icon pinned.
- Open a normal web page and click the icon.
What Chrome will ask
| Permission | Why it is there |

| Access to the page when you click the icon | The inspector has to read the element you point at. The access is for that invocation. Tintstep does not ask for a permanent host permission. |
| Side panel | The colors and the scan sit beside the page. |
| Storage | The last element and the scan stay in the browser until you leave the page. A license, if you connect one, stays on the device until you remove it. |
| Downloads | Asset files that are already on the page save through Chrome's download manager. Tintstep does not rehost them. |
| Context menu | A second way to open the panel from the toolbar icon. |
| Clipboard | The panel writes a color or a font stack when you press Copy. |
